Would you like to take a survey?
I have an announcement to make: tomorrow, I leave for Quebec City to start my new job! I'll be working as a surveyor/crew chief for Transport Canada, administering surveys to truckers at various inspection stations, border crossings and rest stops. Technically, my employer is The Associates Group, an Ottawa employment/recruiting agency that organized the staffing and placement for this project (at the behest of TC). Nevertheless, this is still practically a government job! :-)
Basically, the job entails me setting up and dismantling equipment on-site, helping to direct the trucks into our area, taking the appropriate measurements (truck length & classification, axle weights, etc.), supervising the surveyors in my team as they interact with the drivers (and occasionally giving surveys myself), driving the team to, from & between the sites and our hotels, and a few other duties. Pay is good, and the people I'm working with are really friendly and nice. Another definite plus is that the Feds are footing the bill for expenses! Sweet! Reimbursement for gas and other essentials supplies, $75/day per diem for food, private hotel rooms... Simply awesome! I'll actually be able to save what I earn! Moreover, je peux aussi pratiquer mon français (les sondages sont bilingues)...
For the first month (August), we'll focus our efforts on southern Quebec - the Quebec City-Montreal axis and down into the Eastern Townships. Afterwards, we'll split into two groups - one will head back into Quebec and then on to New Brunswick, while the other heads west into the Prairies (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta). I've marked down my preference for the western option - never been there and would love to see more of my beautiful country! But I'm flexible - wouldn't mind seeing NB either. We'll just have to see when the time comes...
The job is only temporary - it's expected to last about 2 months or so. It should be returning to the Ottawa area by mid-October. However, it might lead to greater opportunities....
As a result, I will be largely out of contact during this period. However, I will do my best to update my blog with highlights/anecdotes/observations etc. as I travel - whenever I manage to get my hands on a computer with Internet access. We'll see, though - as always, no guarantees.
Anyway, wish me luck et bon courage as I embark on this little adventure! See you on the flipside!
